IOTW: Avalon Hotel

Avalon Hotel

Looking north from the top level of the parking lot at the corner of Beatty and Pender across to the Avalon Hotel.

There is a lot of character in the old buildings around the Victory Square area of Vancouver, especially along Pender as it leads to our world famous Chinatown.

The tones and textures of this window frame and shutter make an interesting study.

Unfortunately this "hotel", used to house the down and out in SRO (Single Room Occupancy) units has a tarnished name in Vancouver's Downtown East Side, one of the poorest, economically depressed areas in North America.

It is, perhaps, most unfortunate and oddly perverse, that those subjects that often have the most "character", that offer photographic topics (people or otherwise) of great depth and complexity are often those that depict the most wretched of people, places and times in our world.
