    workshop session 7 – post-processing

      Picasa, workflows

enough technology and technique – it’s time to put some of that science to use. after reviewing the portfolios from session six, the goal of session seven, exercised through the assignment, is to go through the process of printing.

almost all of the in-person time for session seven of the Introduction to Digital Photography workshop was spent reviewing session six’s assignment – a small portfolio.

this was a very visual and personal experience for those at the workshop and that doesn’t translate well to a blog, but i have put together a short video that offers up a small sampling of some of the work that came out of this workshop.

thanks guys – this was fun!

    post-processing

as we reviewed the assignment, we spent some time exploring Google Picasa’s image engine. post-processing allows us to take an image and change it up just about any way we like.

this video goes over some of the material that we talked about. it introduces Picasa and along with this quick guide, helps you get up to speed quickly and easily.

it is very common for digital photographers to manipulate their images “out-of-camera”, after the shutter has been pressed. there are many different schools of thought on digital developing and there are many good internet articles and published books out there that go into great detail so i am not going to further reinvent the wheel here.

i will however suggest you have a good look at scott kelby’s books and his web site. as a professional photographer and president of the national association of photoshop professionals (NAPP), scott has changed the “digital darkroom” forever with his award-winning series of books entitled “The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers” … all three volumes!

another great resource is chris orwig. lynda.com hosts over twenty photoshop and lightroom courses by this insipiring instructor from brookes institute in california. layers magazine (a reference to a photoshop technique) also features a straight forward, clearly written article by chris on lightroom workflows. workflows are methodology that help ensure you get the best and the most out of your images.

    assignment

the assignment for session seven is to produce some 8×10 prints of one or two of the ten images from last sessions assignment on creating a small portfolio.

online printing services offer many different types and sizes of prints and other more unusual ways to print your photos (mugs, mousepads, etc.); here’s a short list …

    • London Drugs Photolab’s are ubiquitous in vancouver
    • Staples Copy and Print offer business and personal solutions
    • kwikpix.ca has great value
    • Mpix offers professional and artistic services

or have a look at this google search.

in the next and final session we will review these prints. i have also invited a guest from my favorite photography supply store to come a chat about his thirty years experience as a photographer .
